Walking past the sea shore you always try to throw away the entangled green mass around your ankles. Why do we suddenly care about growing them?
Because you see we have reached a point in the climate crisis that even if we were to include all the “non arable” land in the world to grow trees- it would not reverse the situation any longer- this is called green carbon by the way. So we need heroes like seaweed that take 20x to 50x times more CO2 from the atmosphere than land based plants do - this is called blue carbon (these carbon credits are significantly more expensive).
Seaweed also reduces acidification in many dead zones of the ocean and some species can make it so habitable that fishes and eels start laying eggs, turtles hang around- it is all around lovely for biodiversity.
The other thing about seaweed is that it produces actually very valuable products - wakame, nori that you can eat, superfood and protein substitute burgers (that further reduce carbon !) and some seaweed when added to cattle feed reduce their methane emission by upto 50%. Seaweed products are now used in a lot of skincare as well- toothpaste, shampoo, alginates, bio fertilisers- the list is endless.
So you see why we chose sea weed production at scale as a means to save the world. Literally.
